Lexi Thompson has won but one major in her career – that coming a decade ago, at the 2014 Kraft Nabisco Championship. Ten years later, she enters the weekend at the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship hoping to college major triumph No. 2. If she does, it will be with a new caddie on the bag. Thompson began working with Mark Wallington, a longtime caddie and friend, just last week in Michigan, where she lost in a playoff to Lilia Vu at the Meijer LPGA Classic.
“Mark has helped me out dramatically,” said Thompson, who on Friday shot 72 in the morning. At 4-under 140, she trailed by two shots as the afternoon wave teed off. “He’s so positive out there. Even when I make a bogey or a bad shot, he’s like, all right, let’s get it back in position, and you’ve got this.
“I think that’s what I need. I can be a little too hard on myself sometimes and I need that person by my side to pick me up when I’m down. ... We have a good time out there. He keeps me smiling, so I’m enjoying him.”
