England’s Charley Hull likes to arrive as late as possible to majors, which this week meant she didn’t fly from London to Seattle until late Monday, picking up hours along her trip west. She arrived just fine. Her clubs did not. Which made Tuesday, a day when she’d normally play nine holes, a little interesting.

“Tuesday I was bored because even any gym shoes were in my golf bag,” said Hull, who opened with a round of 2-under 70 on Thursday. “I couldn't really go to the gym. I had to run in my ‘other’ like normal shoes. I just waited at the airport for my clubs. They didn't know where they were, whether they was on the flight over from London or still in London or here.

“It was a bit stressy.”

Hull did not get to see Sahalee until Wednesday, when she played 18 holes in a practice round (also not normal for her). But Hull has a certain comfort level at tree-lined Sahalee. It reminds her quite a big of the Duchess course at Woburn, where she sometimes plays at home.

Actually, when Hull is home, she plays a whole bunch of golf, which might surprise fans a bit. She is a golf fanatic, pure and simple, and cannot get enough of playing recreational rounds.

Before she stepped on the plane bound for Washington state, she had played eight rounds in seven days.

“When I'm at home I literally love playing golf with my friends and practicing,” she said. “But, yeah, like I was just playing loads of random golf courses and it was good.”

Asked how she does all that and keeps her energy levels up for tournament weeks, Hull just laughed. It is not a problem.

“Just go to the gym, play golf, have a laugh on the golf course,” Hull said. “At the end of the day, I'm 28 years old. If I can't walk six miles around the golf course, there's got to be something wrong with me. I have my little carry bag, walk around, get exercise, enjoy the sunshine ... because it's England at the minute, so the sun is out.”
