Taking on the uphill 192-yard par 3 2nd, the second hole of her first round at Congressional Pornanong Phatlum surged into a tie for second with a hole-in-one. The 32-year-old’s shot ran hot into the right-to-left sloping green, but Phatlum’s orange ball knocked straight into the pin and dropped home for a one on her scorecard.
As Golf Channel commentator Tom Abbott notes, the 5’3 Thai native couldn’t have seen the ball roll into the hole with the back-pin location tucked behind a ridge.
Phatlum’s start gets her off on the right foot as she looks for her first LPGA Tour win in 284 career starts.
